Baby born to brain-dead parent, mother then dies

Like any dad, Dylan Benson of Victoria, British Columbia was overjoyed. He was meeting his new, healthy, baby boy for the first time over the weekend.

But at the same time, he had to say a sorrowful goodbye to his wife, Robyn. Robyn died, having been declared brain dead last year. At the time she was brain dead, she was five months pregnant. She had been kept alive via life support so that the baby could survive.

"It's a heartbreaking story," says San Francisco resident, David DeVous

Robyn passed a few hours after her son, Iver Cohen Benson, was delivered. He was just 28 weeks into term.

"I don't think I have the right words to describe it," said Dylan to the Vancouver Sun.

"It's the best and definitely the worst thing to ever happen to me in my life at the same time.," he stated. "We had to unfortunately say goodbye to the strongest and most wonderful woman I have ever met," said Benson on Facebook.

"I miss Robyn more than words can explain. I could not be more impressed with her strength, and I am so lucky to have known her. She will live on forever within Iver, and in my heart."

Iver will stay at the hospital while his son increases in strength so that he can go home. reports CBC.

A fundraising appeal for both Dylan and Iver has raised over $178,000, which is much higher than expected. The money-raising fund was meant to reach $36,000.
