Disney, westerns, sports, movies and popular character lunch boxes are on display in the very small town of Firebaugh, California along a lonely stretch of Freeway 5. Right off the freeway and to the west is the typical scene of hotel, fast food places and gas station but the true find is in the Apricot Tree Restaurant.
Wander through the restaurant and take a long look at the vast displays of old and sentimental lunch boxes prominently arranged around the restaurant. These lunch boxes are the real thing and arranged by categories throughout the dining room. Hop Along Cassidy is the oldest box and the span of thirty plus years ends with Rambo. The look of colorful character boxes takes one back to their childhood with lunch time in the school yard among friends. They may have been filled with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a thermos full of milk and maybe a homemade cookie. It was a time before pre packaged lunch foods assembled in plastic and put in a zippered container. It was a time when carrying your favorite character was a big part of the day. Action figure heroes and dainty princesses on a square box with a latch that popped up were as much a part of the school day as today’s back packs.
The extensive collection of lunch boxes to peruse just might make the rest of the drive more fun, remembering back to gone by days and fond memories. Located right off the freeway on Panoche Rd in Firebaugh, California, the restaurant is located between Los Angeles and the Bay area. Everyone is sure to find an interesting lunch box here.
