Another public figure is facing some backlash after making what was perceived to be an anti-gay comment. According to Gay Star News on Jan. 22, R&B singer Ashanti upset some fans when she took to Twitter and made a comment that was translated by some fans as homophobic.

The timing couldn’t be any worse for Ashanti who is preparing to release her new album titled “BraveHeart”. It has been awhile since fans have heard from the R&B princess, but she was very vocal on social media following the NFC Championship Game. She went back and fourth on Twitter first saying:

“Who y’all got??? Seahawks or 49ers???”

After a follower responded by criticizing one of her singles from the new album, she responded, “don’t be mad at me cause u in the closet…Flog that ya lil b**ch. Imao!”

Fans quickly interpreted the response as homophobic proclaiming not to listen to Ashanti’s music again. As one fan tweeted:

“I didn’t know u were homophobic like this. Being gay is no laughing matter And I was just rooting for u. Never again.”

The backlash is a result of many who are closeted and may be struggling to come out. It is nothing to joke about and words, even through social media, can hurt. Another tweeter told Ashanti to “watch what you say…” as being in the closet is nothing to be taken lightly.

Ashanti’s album “BraveHeart” is due to be released in the US on February 28. It looks like the R&B singer will have to do some damage control between now and then.
