The Binghamton Mets five game winning streak is a distant memory as they now have dropped three straight. The latest loss coming Monday night in Portland, a 7-3 defeat. Starting hurler Dylan Owen (1-1) struggled, walking six and giving up five runs on five hits.
Zach Lutz got the night off to a good start for Binghamton with an RBI single in the first. He drove in Luis Hernandez, who doubled earlier. The double by Hernandez gave him a nine game hitting streak.
Portland took control of the proceedings with two runs in both the first and second inning. Owens' control abandoned him in the second when he issued back-to-back walks and then hit a batter to load the bases. After retiring the next batter, he walked in a run and that was followed by a sac fly to increase the lead to 4-1.
Adding injury to insult, Binghamton first baseman Marshall Hubbard was injured and Lucas Duda was called on to replace him. No details were available on the injury at the time this story was published.
The Sea Dogs got a long ball from Lars Anderson to make it 5-1. It was Anderson's third tater of the young season.
Binghamton (6-6) made a game of it in the fifth. D.J. Wabick led off with a single and Jonathan Malo walked. That was followed by a Kirk Nieuwenhuis single to load the bases. Hernandez came up with a golden opportunity, but he grounded to second base and the Sea Dogs turned that into a double play. Wabick scored on the play to make it 5-2. Malo came home on a Hector Pellot single, to cut the deficit to two runs, but the B-Mets rally would stall right there.
Edgar Ramirez relieved Owen on the mound in the sixth and issued a leadoff walk to Matt Sheely. Ryan Kalish made him pay, as he sent a rocket over the wall in right field, sewing the game up at that point, 7-3.
Individually, the B-Mets did have a couple notable performances. Lutz had a 3-for-4 day and Wabick enjoyed a 2-for-4 day with a run scored. This is on the heels of a 1-for-18 stretch to start the season.
Game Notes: The B-Mets placed OF Carlos Guzman placed on 7-day Disabled List (right knee) and called up INF Hector Pellot from Brooklyn (SS-A) to Binghamton (AA).
