The weather is getting colder as fall is settling in. This means the heat is on, the shower temperature feels better just a little warmer and pretty soon…itchy, dry skin.
The general approach is to apply moisturizer after showering and be done quickly. While this is effective in relieving dry skin, it doesn’t have the health benefits that Ayurvedic oil self-massage does. In just 15-30 minutes, Ayurvedic oil self-massage can not only nourish the skin, but also improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, increase circulation, stimulate and tone the tissues and decrease the signs of aging.
What is Ayurveda? It is the oldest medical science, from India which infuses health through understanding of the relationship between mind and body. “The more we nurture ourselves, the more radiant we become physically. In keeping with the general orientation of eastern philosophy and healing, Health is Beauty, and Beauty is Health.” – Better Botanicals.
My favorite oil to use is made by Better Botanicals. A year ago, I reviewed several of their products and was thoroughly impressed. This oils is lightweight but effective and comes in a spray bottle for easier application. It has a natural scent, and absorbs nicely.
There are two ways for you to treat yourself to the mental and physical gift of an Ayurvedic oil massage. For a fully beneficial, 30 minute session, start head to toe including the scalp, following these instructions and then bathing or showering afterward. Don’t skip your face! Puffiness and fluid retention can be remedied with facial massage. We also hold a lot of tension in our jaws, and facial massage can help relieve that. Bathing afterward is considered to be the most beneficial process, as the oils stay in the water and continue to infuse and nourish the skin. Regular sessions can help loosen toxins in the muscles and in the joints, allowing them to be eliminated from the body. Remember to drink water or herbal tea before and after your massage to promote this process.
The second way is to massage the oil into the skin lightly, after the shower or bath. Spending just 15 minutes each day lightly massaging the oil into your skin can still provide many of the same benefits (just with less intensity and result).
Both ways can be used for either a way to begin your day by reducing stress and anxiety, or before bedtime to promote a restful sleep.
