One of the more versatile and immediately effectual Ayurvedic treatment items is ginger root. Ginger can be utilized to address a multitude of ailments and symptoms. The many uses for ginger are outlined in the book, The Way of Herbs by Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa. On the Yogi Tea blog, Karta Purkh shares an abbreviated version of the uses for ginger as he writes:
“In my opinion, ginger root, called "the universal medicine" in Ayurveda, is one of the best investments you can make in your health. And it's so simple. This root is delicious, inexpensive and easily available………Ginger is a time-tested remedy for stomach upset, motion sickness, indigestion and nausea. It reduces spasm, absorbs and neutralizes toxins in the gastrointestinal tract and increases the secretion of digestive juices, including bile and saliva.
Among its many uses, ginger helps to lower blood sugar, and treats closely related cardiovascular conditions. Ginger lowers blood fats, including triglycerides, reduces oxidation of LDL and prevents arterial plaque. Research published in 2002 found that an ounce of ginger root per day produced a significant lowering of blood cholesterol.
More traditional ginger uses:
• Arthritis, especially osteoarthritis
• Promoting menstruation (starting a late menstrual period)
• Menstrual cramps
• Cold hands and feet
• Cold and flu
• Carpal tunnel syndrome”
These are very wise statements and also to be added is the usefulness of ginger in appetite balancing. The same mechanism for lowering blood sugar and blood cholesterol eases symptoms of hunger that are not really hunger but are stomach PH imbalances. To drink warm ginger water is a common yogic practice that promotes proper digestion and assists in feeling satiated when true hunger is not present.
