New from the liberterrain...
ANTHEM - The Graphic Novel, based on Ayn Rand's Anthem is ready for release on February 1, 2011.
You may have read the book.
You may have heard on-again off-again news over the years about turning Anthem into a major theatrical release, a Disney animated film, or even a ballet.
You may even have seen the fake movie trailer created by a high school student in 2007.
But this time it's for real; Anthem has been made into a graphic novel.
Anthem depicts a future failed collectivist society in which the very word "I" has been forgotten, and tells the story of how one man, with a number rather than a name, escapes the mindless totalitarian serfdom to rediscover individuality, freedom, and love.
The force behind the graphic novel is writer/producer Charles Santino.
An article in MindPost (a website for objective parents raising rational kids) described how Santino came to create the graphic novelization of Rand's 1938 novelette.
"He conceived of the project, contacted ARI [Ayn Rand Institute] and their publisher, put the team together, and has created a terrific new work. He has been faithful to the source material, whilst opening up Rand’s fiction to a wider audience."
A few years earlier, Santino relates, he was in a bookstore when he happened to notice Anthem. "The back cover copy was intriguing and so were the first few sentences."
Santino calls himself a "packager" in the comics business where, he told MindPost's Rick Marazzani, he "collaborated with Michael McDowell on the Dell/Abyss psychological horror novel, Toplin" and then put in "a seven-issue run scripting Conan the Barbarian for Marvel, and then adapted, scripted, and packaged Aesop’s Fables for Fantagraphics.
Santino doesn't identify himself as a libertarian. And as far as Ayn Rand and Objectivism goes, Santino told the Libertarian News Examiner, "I am neither a believer nor a non-believer, just a packager who stumbled upon a wonderful story that was one of the most adaptable to the graphic novel format that I've ever read."
And that should be good enough for any freedom-loving libertarian.

It's been years since I read Anthem, but this brought it back in a whole new way! What a fun read. I only hope comics like this are made of Ayn Rand's other novels.
Pedestrian adaptation with substandard art. Less than mediocre in every way. A big disappointment. Rand would not approve.
