It's been a few months since we've last seen Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and her friends, family, and frenemies at Palos Verdes High, but in MTV's Awkward time, it's only been a week. The return to season three takes place only seven mere days after Jenna cheated on Matty (Beau Mirchoff), and she still hasn't gotten around to telling him about it yet-- or telling Collin (Nolan Funk) that it's over. And as you can see from the just released trailer for the second half of the third season of the acclaimed comedy, things might be found out rather than admitted, leaving Jenna to spiral and the show to head down a much more serious path than ever before.
"Going into these storylines, I think all of us were hesitant a little bit because, teasing these storylines, Jenna is really making decisions that a lot of people are not going to be happy with-- her parents included, her friends, and probably our audience. She's going to break a lot of hearts along the way," series star Nikki DeLoach said to LA TV Insider Examiner over the phone earlier this month.
"But at the end of the day, for me, I really feel like this is an honest portrayal of what a teenager experiences in high school. I know that I had been there, where I went from being the most likeable, easy-going kid, never causing my problems any trouble, getting As, never even looking at alcohol, you know, and then all of a sudden, like overnight, I was making all of these unlikeable choices, and my parents were sitting there going 'The wheels have fallen off the bus, and we don't know how to put it back together.'
"I think it's a very, very relatable storyline-- not only to the choices that she's making but also the backlash she's getting from the circle of people around her. The story is not about the choices that you make at the time-- because we're all going to make mistakes-- it's how you recover from those choices, and it's how you repair your life and rebound."
Season three is series creator Lauren Iungerich's last, though MTV has renewed the show for a fourth season. Knowing that, we have to hope that things don't stay dark for too long. Teenage years are the toughest ones, but we want to see Iungerich off on a high (and happy) note!
