The Mysterious Tadpole by Steven Kellogg (both author and illustrator) is a simple but fun and exciting children’s book that shows young readers not only the close connection to a special pet but teaches the results of determination and hard work.
Louis is given a tadpole for his birthday which he names Alphonse. Louis is thrilled with his new pet who he keeps in a jar and takes to school for show and tell. He doesn’t think much about it when he discovers Alphonse has a particular liking for cheeseburgers but has a few problems when the tadpole’s diet makes him grow and grow and grow.
To keep feeding Alphonse he takes on a job as a paperboy to buy cheeseburgers. This solves one problem. The next problem is the size of Alphonse. The jar is outgrown and he is moved to the kitchen sink, the bathtub, and the school swimming pool.
All through The Mysterious Tadpole children are entertained by the hilarious and heartwarming story and antics of Louis and his friend the librarian. The charming illustrations by Steven Kellogg hold young children’s attention and create many giggles as we watch Alphonse grow.

What a cute book!
Great story book! I've had the same problem with eating cheeseburgers, and now I'm on a diet! LOL. :)
Children learn so much from animal books. Thank you for your resource and willingness to post this article for learning experiences.
He's huge! :)
Looks like a great book. Steven Kellogg is one of my favorites.
I think all kids wonder how tadpoles don't outgrow their homes so this would be so fun to read with them.
Another really cute book you found!
