"Stuck" is an award winning documentary about the difficulties of international adoption, but more importantly it is about the rights of children everywhere to have a loving family. Last night it appeared for one brief shining moment, well actually for much longer that that as movie goers watched the documentary and stayed to have their questions answered.
Viewers learned important facts and information about the difficulties surrounding international adoptions. For example there are overwhelming numbers of children that are orphaned around the world. International adoptions may take three years or more and $28,000 to complete, often leaving children languishing in jam-packed orphanages missing major heath and educational milestones. That caregivers in orphanages really care, but with one four caregivers to every approximately 80 children time is spent just handling the many emergencies that come up.
But with all those difficulties and a broken system, international adoptions can happen and families can celebrate the joy of saving a child's life. Those who join in the movement to help international adoptions provide the best possible process and safeguards for the best interest of the children, their healthy, well-being and future can celebrate the future that comes with being raised in a loving caring home instead of simply fighting for survival.
Follow the stories of Tihun from Ethiopia, Nate from Vietnam, and Erickson and Therline from Haiti on their individual voyages from orphanages in their native countries to their homes with families in the United States, in "Stuck." Find out about the stories behind the lives of these four children, and the families seeking to parent them. Learn from the the intense hope and disappointment they experience on the odyssey to unite as families. Some stories are heartwarming, showing incredible examples of kids who blossom after joining their families, while others offer insight into the emotional and physical impact institutional life can have on these kids.
Leaving Houston, the bus tour of "Stuck" heads to the Texas cities of Austin, San Antonio and Dallas this weekend. From now until May 17 they continue the bus tour of screenings across the nation to arrive in Washington DC to present President Obama and our political leaders with a petition to improve international adoption conditions, not just the the process of them, but the lives that can benefit from it.
