Quentin Tarantino refused to cut the torture scene in his breakout film Reservoir Dogs. Lee Daniels actually fired department heads during principal photography on Precious. The Los Angeles Times posted this revealing video where the five DGA (Directors Guild of America) nominees share winning anecdotes about the "moments they each became directors." (note: look out for the mild jab made at Jason Reitman during his story)

My vote goes to Tarantino, all the way. But these were very interesting stories. Would love to be among these people telling my own directing stories.
