In the mood for something creative? Got a hot date this weekend that you want to impress by showing off how in touch you are with the local arts? Let me suggest a visit to the Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School this coming Saturday, April 28th, for an event unlike any other taking place in town.

Dr. Sketchy’s is actually a national program that began in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York. Started by Molly Crabapple, an art school dropout, the movement has now spread to more than 100 cities worldwide, including Indianapolis. The basic and brilliant idea is that figure drawing can be so much more than the traditional (dare I say, boring) way it is presented in art school. Instead, it can be a fun environment with hot models in creative settings for a full artistic experience. And booze. There has to be booze.

As the movement began to spread, local chapters formed successful partnerships with burlesque performers. Burlesquers often have ideas for themes that provide creative inspiration to artists ready to sketch the various poses, costumes, and backdrops in a fun environment filled with music, drinks, and the camaraderie of an art event rather than a class. A match made in heaven.

Dr. Sketchy’s came to Indianapolis several years ago through the vision of Christine DePriest, and is now run by the lovely and amazing Christiebelle, a stalwart presence on the local art, music, and burlesque scene. Past Dr. Sketchy’s have featured performers/models from Bottoms Up Burlesque and Crème De Les Femmes, in addition to many other beautiful models familiar to those who support local arts.

This upcoming Dr. Sketchy’s event will be fantastic, no doubt, as it features Angel Burlesque’s own Pepper Mills, who can always be counted on for a heck of a show. It will take place at the Sinking Ship, 4923 North College Avenue in Broad Ripple, and is sponsored by Hero House Comics and Holy Cow Cupcakes. There is a $5 admission, but all proceeds go to Girls Rock! Indianapolis, an organization that works to build positive self-esteem in young girls and to encourage creative expression through music.

So, grab your supplies and join the ranks of the Art Monkeys. Be a part of something out of the ordinary where you will meet cool people and awaken your inner sketch artist. Most of all, come out and support those who work hard to make Indianapolis a vibrant and colorful place to live.
