Awaken 2010: Mississippi worship event featuring Shane and Shane

The Davis Event Center in Fulton, Mississippi was the site for a worship event dubbed “Awaken” this past Saturday night. Bands both local and international were present, along with guest speaker and native Mississippian Gary Permenter.

Hosted by Bethel Baptist Church in Tupelo, “Awaken” featured performances by Bethel Baptist’s youth band, the Northstar Church of Saltillo’s worship team, local rappers Notus of Amory, South African worship singer/songwriter Brenton Brown, worship band Glorious Unseen, and popular Christian artists Shane and Shane.

The event started at 5:30 PM with music from local talents beginning soon after. Notus (pronounced “notice”) energized the crowd in singing along with their hip-hop stylings. Their official website mentions their mission statement:

“God has gifted them with an ability to minister to many different cultures in an effective and personal way, and they believe that being an interracial group from Mississippi will send an inspirational message to believers and unbelievers alike.”

South African worship singer/songwriter Brenton Brown, author of worship staples “Everlasting God” and “Hallelujah (Your Love Is Amazing)”, took the stage next. His four-piece band played a set filled with worship songs both loud and intimate, setting the mood for the rest of the night.

As Glorious Unseen took the stage, their artful image and song choices cast a contemplative look at how we worship and who exactly we are worshipping. The band changed course toward the end of their set, setting up a more thoughtful tone in anticipation of speaker Gary Permenter’s message. The message, based out of Acts 9, was one of awakening, true to the name of the event itself. Mr. Permenter told of Saul’s spiritual and lifestyle change from persecutor of Christ to crusader of the Son of God.

Finally, internationally known duo Shane and Shane approached the stage with only a drummer accompanying them. Their set started out lighthearted and funny, as guitarist/vocalist Shane Barnard experienced a few technical problems, but soon changed tone to serious and deep prayer in song to Jesus Christ. Their experience in leading worship in their native Texas proved to be effective, as the two Shanes closed out their set and the show with the popular hymn, “Before the Throne of God Above”.
