The Colorado Avalanche have traded defenseman Kyle Quincey to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Steve Downie.
This trade is a bit puzzling, and there are many things to think about when looking at the breakdown of this deal.
Kyle Quincey was a big leader on the Avalanche blue line and overall played well this year. Why was he trade-bait? Perhaps it may be because the Avalanche simply have too much talented defensive prospects, guys like Stefan Elliott and Tyson Barrie, both former WHL defensemen of the year. Perhaps Quincey was viewed as a valuable asset by many interested teams and the Avalanche thought they could get a good return for him.
Steve Downie at the time of the trade led the Tampa Bay Lightning in penalty minutes and recorded 12 goals and 16 assists for a total of 28 points in 55 games.
Steve Downie will bring toughness, grit, and offensive capabilities to the Avalanche as they make their playoff push and we also need to thank Kyle Quincey for his services to the Avalanche wish him the best of luck in Tampa Bay.
The NHL trading deadline is near and it will be interesting to see what the Avs do with managing their roster to achieve a postseason berth.
