Fall is in full swing, which means all sorts of fun activities for you and your family to enjoy. But, one thing fall brings that is anything but fun is the flu!

Influenza, or “the flu”, is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. It may sometimes be mistaken for the common cold, however flu symptoms are more severe and develop very quickly.

Each year, between 10 and 20 percent of the U.S. population is infected with the flu. Children have the highest chance of contracting it.

Here are some helpful tips to protect your family from the flu this year.

  1. Vaccinate. The flu vaccine is the number one way to avoid contracting the flu. You can get the flu shot at your doctor’s office or any pharmacy. Insurance covers the shot under certain plans.
  2. Wash your hands. And wash them often! Use warm water and soap when possible. Otherwise, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, which is handy when away from home.
  3. Avoidance. Always avoid getting close to people who are sick. If your child is sick, keep them home from school and away from other functions so they don’t infect others. Also, be sure to keep your family away from large crowds like the mall or movies, especially if the flu is hitting your community hard.
