Avoid package thefts by using the US Post Office as a street address

Readers who are worried that packages delivered to their homes by UPS or FedEx may be stolen off the porch can now use the local post office as a street address.  As reported in a crime blotter in the column, this has occurred in Altadena several times, especially around holidays that see a high volume of deliveries.

The United States Post Office is now offering a service to post office box customers.  Resident Carolyn Seitz sent us a copy of the letter that Officer in Charge Jin Lou put in boxes at the Altadena Post Office on Jan. 23, 2012.  Customers can use the post office’s street address as the delivery address for their packages.

Private carriers such as UPS, FedEx and DHL will not deliver to a post office box. When a customer signs up for this service, the post office will accept packages from private carriers, place them in a secure parcel locker if available. The post office will also accept regular mail with the street address and place it in the post office box.

Other services offered to post office box renters include

  • Real Mail Notification Services notifies the customer by email or text, Monday-Saturday, if there is mail in the box or a package to be picked up
  • Signature on File allows the post office to keep a copy of your signature on file and accept certain signature-required mail and packages.

Post office boxes in Altadena range in price from $120 to $630 per year, depending on the size of the box.  Prices for other areas can be found by entering address information at PO Boxes Online.  Customers can reserve a box online or by talking to a retail associate at their local post office.  Call 1-800-ASK-USPS® (800-275-8777) for more information.
