Tired of the same old smoothie combos? It’s time to look beyond bananas and berries. Start your morning with an avocado-based smoothie. Avocados contain more potassium per gram than a banana, not to mention a host of other nutritional benefits, such as cancer-preventing phytochemicals.
As they say on TV: but wait—there’s more. The whey protein in this avocado and green tea smoothie helps build muscle (whey protein is often used in recovery by injured athletes), and the Greek yogurt adds even more protein. Don’t overlook the green tea powder. It adds flavor, sure, but it’s also an antioxidant powerhouse.
Add up all of these ingredients and you’ll find that it’s hard to match the combo for a morning energy boost. The recipe makes two glasses, so you can share with a loved one, or stick the other in the fridge to enjoy after your first workout of the day. The muscle-building properties are perfect for post-exercise recovery. (It won’t hold up very long, though. You’ll want to drink it within a few hours of making, while it’s good and fresh.)
Sweeteners can be controversial, so the decision is yours. While this smoothie was created using Swerve, feel free to use your favorite sweetener, or even a dash of honey or agave nectar. Feel free to adjust the sweetness to your own palate.
Avocado and Green Tea Smoothie Recipe
- 1 tsp. matcha green tea powder
- 1 Tbsp. hot water
- ½ medium ripe avocado
- ½ cup Cabot plain Greek-style yogurt
- ¼ cup vanilla whey protein powder
- 2 tsp. Swerve (or preferred sweetener)
- 1 ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk
In a small bowl, whisk matcha green tea powder and hot water, and set aside. Cut avocado into chunks, and add to blender. Add Greek yogurt, whey protein powder, and sweetener. Pour in almond milk and matcha green tea mixture, and blend until smooth. Pour into two glasses.
