Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Repeal Day, Avion Tequila today announced the release of its latest expression, Reserva 44 Extra Añejo. Though perhaps still best known for its cameos on the HBO series "Entourage," the brand has been demonstrating its place among serious tequilas for the past couple of years. The release of this extra-aged expression should please aficionados who are also fans.
"I've waited and waited to release Avion Reserva 44," co-founder Ken Austin said in a press release from the company today. In fact, the tequila, aged 43 months in regular American oak barrels and an extra month in hand-rotated petite barriques, exceeds the minimum aging requirements for extra añejo tequila by about eight months, and the smaller finishing barrels add a bit more intensity to the aging process.
When the Spirits Examiner spoke with Austin on the release of Avion Espresso earlier this year, he was excited for the impending release of Reserva 44. "The liquid for the extra-añejo is immaculate," said Austin.
Crafted in the highlands town of Jesus Maria, Mexico, the agave (grown at 7,000 feet) is slow-roasted for 72 hours, and undergoes a proprietary slow filtration. Aging and finishing took place in a "temperature-controlled cave" according to a spokesperson.
This special expression of the Avion portfolio naturally comes in a special fire-polished crystal bottle, hand signed and numbered by Austin and encased in a custom gift box. The company recommends sipping it neat or with a single ice cube for minimal dilution.
The Spirits Examiner hasn't yet had a sip of the new tequila, but is looking forward to the opportunity, and we'll be certain to post our thoughts when that opportunity arises.
Avion Tequila Reserva is limited to 744 cases globally, with 150 cases available in December at select liquor stores, clubs, bars and restaurants. It has an ABV of 40% and an SRP of $150.
