San Diego Aviators are 4-2 in its inaugural Mylan World TeamTennis season.
In a come-back victory, the San Diego Aviators defeated the Texas Wild in Overtime to win the match, 21-18. This win pushes the Aviators to first place in the Western Conference in the Mylan World TeamTennis league with a 4-2 record.
July 10, the Aviators battled the Wild at home to lose in a devastating decisive match-point in a Supertiebreaker. However, tonight the Aviators came back with vengeance from behind to win.
Wild’s coach Brent Haygarth chose the night’s lineup to start with mixed doubles, women’s doubles, men’s singles and to conclude with women’s singles and men’s doubles.
In the first set, Aviators’ mixed doubles pair Kveta Peschke and Raven Klaasen faced Wild’s Anabel Medina Garriques and Aisam Qureshi. Previously, San Diego was able to defeat the Wild in mixed doubles, but tonight the Wild prevailed defeating the Aviators 5-3 in the set.
Next, Daniela Hantuchova joined teammate Peschke on the colored court for women’s doubles against Texas’ Darija Jurak and Garriques. The Wild were able to overcome Hantuchova and Peschke winning the set, 5-3, and pushing the Wild’s lead to 10-6 heading into the third set.
Aviators’ Somdev Devvarman went against Wild’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. in men’s singles. Devvarman, coming from behind, tied the set, 3-3. Qureshi then substituted in for Bogomolov due to an apparent groin sprain. Devvarman was able to close the gap to just two games behind Texas, 13-11, after winning the set 5-3. Bogomolov did return to the court later in the match.
Into the fourth set, the Aviators took the lead for the first time in the match thanks to Daniela Hantuchova dominating in women’s singles against Garriques, winning the set 5-1. This put San Diego in the lead heading into the final set, 16-14.
With energy and momentum behind them, Aviators’ Devvarman and Klaasen battled Wild’s Bogomolov and Qureshi in men’s doubles for the final set. San Diego came back to tie the set, 4-4, to cause a 9-point Tiebreaker to determine the fifth set. The Aviators took an early lead and finished the set, 5-1, to win the match, 21-18.
“This was a great team win for us. All the momentum was going against us, but we were able to come from behind. Somdev really turned it around for us and was the positive turning point in the match tonight,” said Aviators coach Dave “Macca” Macpherson.
This win tonight puts the San Diego Aviators in first place in the Western Conference standings.
