AVENTURA, FL – The Song Is You: The Songs of Jerome Kern"Continues the Melodies & Memories Series at The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. When he wrote "They Didn't Believe Me," Jerome Kern introduced the first modern ballad. When he teamed with Oscar Hammerstein II to write Show Boat and the songs "Old Man River," "Make Believe" and "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man," he created the Broadway musical as we know it today.
The Song Is You: The Songs of Jerome Kern presents a spirited celebration of his classic hits as part of the Melodies & Memories Series at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center from January 18 through 22, 2012.
After creating Show Boat in 1927, Kern continued writing for Broadway penning such hits as "The Song Is You," and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." The classic songs from his Hollywood years beginning in 1935 include the Academy Award-winning “The Way You Look Tonight," as well as "I Won't Dance," "A Fine Romance," and "I'm Old Fashioned."
Inducted in 1970 into the ASCAP Songwriters Hall of Fame, Kern's celebrated collaborators included Oscar Hammerstein, Dorothy Fields, Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer and Yip Harburg.
Produced by Mazel Musicals, Inc. and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the Melodies & Memories Series celebrates America’s greatest songs from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood. The productions in the series are conceived and directed by Barry Levitt, former Artistic Director of New York's 92nd Street Y’s smash Lyrics and Lyricists Series.
The series continues with At Last: The Songs of Harry Warren (Feb. 8-12, 2012) and Thanks for the Memories: the Music of the Paramount Pictures Era (March 7-11, 2012).
Showtimes are Wednesday, January 18 through Friday, January 20, 2012 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, January 21 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday January 22, 2012 at 2 p.m.
