Well, another update to the IOS mobile version, and all sorts of new goodies have followed. With the new update, Avengers Alliance continues to get closer to the Playdom and Facebook versions, with more weapons, items, heroes, costumes and missions being added almost weekly now.
With this week’s IOS update for the mobile version, we’ve been given Spec Ops, golden weapons, new gear and resources, Phoenix Five costumes, as well as a new type of currency. Loosely following the Avengers Vs. X-men storyline from the comics, Spec Ops opens all sorts of new opportunities for tons of new items. And while it’s exciting to see what’s new, there’s a long road ahead to being successful at managing time and resources.
We’ve seen some recent updates that added Nightcrawler, Gambit, Black Panther, and now Rogue. Except for Nightcrawler, who costs 48 Command Points, the rest of the above-mentioned heroes all cost 90 Command Points. So, unless you’ve got a wallet full of cash or have downloaded every app and trial offer from Tapjoy, it’s going to be a long month of grinding.
With Spec Ops comes a new type of energy needed to complete battles and boss fights (ISO-8), and it’s used specifically for these missions along with the regular energy. So instead of just having to manage energy, you’ll also have to carefully manage use of this very rare ISO.
So why care about Spec Ops? Well, besides getting to fight with the Avengers or X-men in the AvX story arc, is the chance to unlock Magik. She has been praised throughout the Playdom forums and other Avengers Alliance forums as one of the best heroes in the game.
There are also weapons and other special gear up for grabs from the boss “wheels” and give a chance at rare items for your agent. Factor in golden weapons, which are obtained only by completing the premium missions, and even someone with attention issues will find themselves with more than enough to keep occupied.
This season of PvP proved just how many gamers are out there researching strategies, so I’m going to offer a little advice. First and foremost, Spec Ops tasks MUST be completed in order. Check your task menu from the Helicarrier to see where you’re at with completing the current task. Also, check out the Avengers Alliance Mobile Playdom Forums for that list. Since ISO is very hard to obtain, and since you’ll use a lot to continue on, management without any waste is a must.
Secondly, see what Epic Boss drops there are. If it’s not worth all of your resources and time to invest in the Epic Boss drops, then you can get by with just completing the bare minimum to get all the tasks. ISO is used very quickly, so this is a fork in the road. Once the decision is made, it’ll be painful to go back on that decision.
And lastly, tasks 24 and 25 will not only require that you have all of the new heroes but also complete all deploys. This is a huge investment in command points, ISO, and energy, and most players won’t have the resources available to go this route. So how do you get around this? Each task costs 25 gold to skip, so for a total of 50 gold you can move on with your day. Even that sounds like a lot, but with 28 days to work towards obtaining Magik, it is possible to get this amount of gold.
It will be a month full of grinding and new strategies, scouring boards for advice on where to invest time and for which heroes and gear. By the time season 3 of PvP hits, the playing field will have drastically changed and we’ll be seeing new combinations that weren’t even imaginable. It will also bring more depth of strategy into play. I’m excited, and I know I’m not alone. So get back into the game and grind away gamers. It’s going to be a long month!
