As you've probably heard by now, James Cameron's Avatar has become the highest grossing film at the box office of all time. On Monday, January 25th, it was announced that the fantasy epic had surpassed The Dark Knight's domestic gross and became the second highest grossing film of all time. Bringing in another $36 million this past weekend, the film had $552.8 million domestically passing The Dark Knight's $533.3 million. It now has the opportunity to outdo Titanic's $600.8 million domestic gross, which it's expected to do sometime next month. The film brought in $107 million overseas that same weekend (Jan. 23-24) bringing its overseas total to $1.28 billion. Titanic's overseas record was $1.24 billion.
Then on Tuesday, January 26th, Cameron wound up outdoing himself as Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time and trumped Cameron's own Titanic. Avatar's domestic total currently sits at a little over $558 million while its foreign gross is nearly $1.32 billion bringing its worldwide total to nearly $1.88 billion dollars. Titanic's worldwide total was $1.84 billion. Since Avatar has only been in theaters for six weeks and has been the box office champion during its entire run, it'll be interesting to see how much this incredible film brings in at the end of its box office run.
