“Man of Steel” and “Iron Man 3” may have been one of the biggest influencers this year on superhero talk and creativity for fans and enthusiasts, but for Baltimore Comic-Con’s costume contest the influences from science fiction won the day.
Winners for 2013’s contest were announced by Baltimore Comic-Con last Thursday, Sept. 12. The star panel of judges had the inclusion of: the ever well-known comics artist Frank Cho, popular cosplayer Ivy Doomkitty with the event hosted by the emcee talents of New Yorker comedian Joe Bronzi.
While the latest movie-bound armor design had a merging creativity for Paul Day’s version of comic book’s Iron Man Hulkbuster, the first place of Male Contestants was in queue with Star Wars and Steampunk cosplayers.
And science fiction found its way to the most crowd amazement and judges appraisal through a look based on James Cameron’s “Avatar”. Aaron Thompson put together the likeness of the Jake Sully character when in blue alien form.
Judges named Thompson the Best Overall Costume, which renders the cash grand prize of $1,000. dollars.
Star Wars and steampunk were a conjoined theme for Robert Tongue, who took third place under Male contestants for his Steam Punk Fett. Second place was all steampunk and video gaming with Dale Horey’s design of Pain. Second place found the cogs of steampunk wowing judges again under Female Contestants by Crystal Trezza appearing as Steampunk Iron Maiden.
Caroline Jones was able to break incredulousness away into a first place for Female Contestants with her video game inspired Princess Daisy. Carlin Gayer secured a third place victory with her gender jumping version of Aragorn from “Lord of the Rings”
