Avatar Director James Cameron Has Some Biting Comments About Piranha 3-D

It seems that Hollywood bigwig James Cameron is out to tear into anyone who he deems unworthy. Not long after his tear into manmade global warming skeptics, calling them "swine," Cameron went on to tell Mike Ryan of Vanity Fair that "Piranha 3-D is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D—it cheapens the medium."

This statement comes from the same man who told Hollywood that 3-D was the wave of the future and that they needed step up to the 21st century, embrace technology and follow his lead. Of course like a true elitist, only he and a select few are allowed to determine what other can and can't do.

Mark Canton, producers of the killer fish flick fired back with an open letter to Mr. Cameron: "Mr. Cameron, who singles himself out to be a visionary of moviemaking, seems to have a small vision regarding any motion pictures that are not his own...His comments are ridiculous, self-serving and insulting to those of us who are not caught up in serving his ego and his rhetoric."

It seems that Cameron can afford to hold his nose up at what he feels is not worthy filmmaking, since he has produced one of the most successful movies of all time—yet let's not forget that Cameron's first movie was ironically Piranha 2: The Spawning (1981), which he wrote, directed and worked on the special effects. The movie is on numerous all-time lists as one of worst horror movies. The film has a 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I guess the ex-truck driver turned director forgot where he came from, or given his lashing out at Piranha 3-D, he'd like to forget where he came from. Yes it's true that in recent years Cameron has said that he didn't direct the whole movie, and that he was not even able to edit the film, but he did tell Morley Safer, in a 60 Minutes interview, that Piranha 2 was "the best flying piranha film ever made," never once mentioning any problems during the making of the film.

Unfortunately Cameron wasn't content on just basing unworthy filmmakers, In true piranha fashion Cameron also decided to bite the hand that feeds him, so to speak, lashing out at 20th Century Fox and Fox home video, the studio that produced Avatar and distributes the DVD. Cameron scolded the studio for not reducing their carbon imprint enough (the studio said that they would be fully carbon-neutral by the end of the year), and has called DVD's, wasteful and dangerous to the environment—this coming from a filmmaker who has all of his movies out on DVD, with Avatar out in 3 versions— and let's not forget the plastic 3D glasses needed to watch his 3-D films, and all the plastic Avatar merchandise, like lunch boxes, video games, action figures and other and toys,

I'm sure that all of the environmentalists out there will be happy to agree with Mr. Cameron regarding DVD, and decide not to purchase Avatar on DVD or any other movie the direct has out on DVD. In fact I'm sure there might be a handful of non-environmentalists who will be compelled to do the same.

What do you think about Cameron's statements?
