James Cameron's sci-fi saga 'Avatar' has secured the No. 3 spot on the all-time domestic box office charts. As of this past weekend, the film has raised its domestic total to $491.8 million and is expected to continue to climb.

Worldwide, this epic tale has made $1.6 billion. James Cameron’s last movie ‘Titanic’ (released in 1997) still remains in the lead at $1.8 billion.

For now, ‘The Dark Knight’ is in the No. 2 spot with $533.3 million domestically. And again, Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ still has a hefty lead in the No. 1 spot with $600 million domestically.

Even if a new revenue record is obtained, it is unlikely that ‘Avatar’ will pass the amount of tickets sold for ‘Titanic’ due to the increase in ticket prices over the past years. And with ‘Avatar’ some theater locations offer a 3-D version of the film, which of course costs a few dollars extra.

Will ‘Avatar’ continue to climb its way to the top? It appears that it may be possible considering the way the film has continuously gripped its audience.
