The team also placed defenseman Ryan Wilson on injured reserve (retroactive to Sept. 15).
After beginning his career in his native Finland, the 21-year-old Aittokallio played his first season in North America last season; playing primarily for Lake Erie. He also suited up in one contest for the Avalanche on April 11; allowing two goals on 25 shots before leaving the game due to cramps. Aittokallio is expected to split time with Calvin Pickard with the Monsters this season.
After spending last season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, Desbiens was signed this summer as a free agent. The 28-year old right wing has 23 games of NHL experience; scoring no points, but racking up 37 penalty minutes.
Malone was selected by the Avalanche in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He has played 22 games for the Avalanche, including 13 last season, accumulating four total points.
Wilson injured himself during this year’s Burgundy/White game just preceding the preseason. The oft-injured defenseman has yet to play a full season in the NHL. Last season, he was limited to 12 games; scoring three points.
Barring any further moves, the Avalanche will go into their season-opening game on Oct. 2 against the Anaheim Ducks with 13 forwards, eight healthy defensemen and two goaltenders on their roster.
