Commander players who love Kaalia of the Vast rejoice, you have a new toy to play with: Avacyn, Guardian Angel. This interesting new Magic: The Gathering card spoiled today June 26, 2014 in an article by Adam Styborski on Wizards.com from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expansion set Magic 2015 can have a huge impact on your game.

Avacyn, Guardian Angel - 2WWW

5WW: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to target player this turn by sources of the color of your choice.
5/4

Unlike Avacyn, Agel of Hope Avacyn, Guardian Angel is much easier to cast. She may not have as large of an effect on the battlefield as her previous incarnation, however she'll still be able to make a large influence on how your opponent plays.

There's a couple of things to note about Avacyn, Guardian Angel. Her first ability prevents damage by a color, and doesn't actually give protection from that color. That means your opponent will be able to target her and your other creatures with spot removal such as Hero's Downfall or Banishing Light. The other is that she prevents damage, not loss of life. That's important to be aware of with cards like Merchant of Gray Asphodel, Duskmantle Seer, and Bubbling Cauldron running around.

That being said, seven mana to protect yourself from an attack (provided that your opponent doesn't control creatures from multiple colors) is a fantastic ability which if unstopped will lead to your victory. Special abilities aside, she's also a 5/4 flying vigilance creature who'll pull you double duty both offensively and defensively. Imagine this: Your opponent is playing a mono-colored deck. Backed up with counters like Dissolve and Syncopate, Avacyn, Guardian Angel can lock down your opponent, even if she's brought in from a sideboard. Yes, we believe Avacyn, Guardian Angel will be making an appearance across a wide variety of decks both competitively and casually. Perhaps even yours.
