Autumn getaways in Mystic Connecticut

  Rowing regattas rock the Mystic

Mystic is tying autumn, harvest, Halloween and boating together  well enough to provide a set of short weekend trips. A pair of rowing regattas, special dining focused on locally produced and harvested foods and a Halloween adventure will keep the fall season busy. Combine the dining with your favorite event for a special treat.

A pair of rowing races
On Saturday, September 19 the Mystic Weekend of Rowing kicks off with the Battle Between the Bridges Invitational Regatta featuring national team and Olympic rowers  in contest between north of the Amtrak bridge and ends at the bascule bridge in downtown Mystic. This is a 500 meter race and the best viewing is from Mystic River Park and the Mystic Arts Center lawn.  The second event is the 18th annual Coastweeks Regatta will be held at Mystic Seaport on Sunday September 20 between 8am and 3 pm. Visitors are able to watch the regatta from the lawn behind the Seamen’s Inn. A 2,000 meter event, it begins at the point where I-95 passes over the Mystic River and ends at Mystic Seaport’s Lighthouse Point.  In addition to taking in the races, viewers may want to see the National Rowing Hall of Fame on the Seaport grounds.

From the sea and the garden a locavore dining event
Chef Tim Quinn of the Seamen’s Restaurant and Pub at the Seaport supports local sourcing of his supplies and starting in September, through November,  they will come from within 10 (September), 25 (October) and 50 (November) miles of the restaurant. Local farms, oyster and scallop producers, wineries and breweries will be participants.  The dates are all Fridays,  September 18, October 16 and November 20 and the cost is $300 per couple for the entire three dinner series ($170 per single) or $110 per dinner per couple ($60 per single) including tax and tip.(860) 572-5303.

Ghosts, pirates, mutineers and Halloween fun
In October Mystic Seaport will be haunted by mutineers and a villainous crew and it will be up to visitors to solve the mystery. Titled “Blood of the Mutineers”, the story will have visitors scouring the village for clues to the secret. Performances are October 16-18, 23-25 and 29-31 and begin at 6:15 and every quarter hour thereafter.  Adult admission is $21 with ages 4-18 at $20. This program is not recommended for kids under 12 or persons with mobility problems. (860) 572-5322. Use the north entrance and gate. Tickets can be bought online.
