Autism in military

San Antonio, Texas has some of the best treatment for children with autism from military families. In 2013 a congressionally mandated pilot program was added to the San Antonio repertoire of military family treatments for Autism. An estimated 8500 children from military families have a form of autism. The Department of Defense already had significant treatment opportunity for autism sufferers in San Antonio. This new program Dr. Jonathan Woodsen, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, hopes will add confidence to military families worried about how serious the commitment from DOD is in regards toward treatments. This especially coming at a time when many are uncertain of the future of health care in The United States.

The existing program, which remained in place, is called Enhanced Access to Autism Services Demonstration, and began in July 2012. The pilot program allows retirees and their families to as well receive ASD benefits. This is an acknowledgement that Autism care and treatment is an evolving quantity. The next phase of development will be trying to identify what are the best practices for periodic assessments – namely who needs treatment and over what period of time.

The pilot program was crafted after extensive information gathering from experts and advocacy groups. It was based on validated tests and strives to implement the right care at the right stage of the child’s development. Parents input is highly valued in this process. The goals is to create and develop large networks of professionals and para-professional to serve children and families of Autism on many levels. San Antonio programs are a benefit to military families and often families can get assigned to San Antonio in order to receive specific Autism care for their children. A key feature of these programs are updated care plans that do not neglect ongoing assessment. This focus and commitment is often greatly appreciated among military families that relate to this issue.
