Sunday, June 5th, 2011 is a trailblazing walk for Autism Speaks. For the first time the walk will be held on the premises of NY Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, New York as Autism Speaks has donated funds to the The institute for Brain Development that will offer "evaluation, treatment and research for autism spectrum disorders in children and adults."
This effort was spearheaded by The New York Center for Autism, led by Laura Slatkin and Ilene Lanier and with generous contributions from the Simons Foundation and Autism Speaks.
Families will now have an opportunity to participate in learning interventions while living with autism.
One sister of a 23 year old young man with autism will walk on Sunday. Her words resonate, as she looks back at a picture of happy times with her newly diagnosed brother.
A picture might tell a thousand words. When you are a child, life seems easy and uncomplicated; but not so, for many families like mine. My brother Paul has autism.
Autism is a family disease. It does not only effect one individual, it contours every aspect of life.
Along with my brothers Jesse and Tyler and my parents, we have learned to love and live with autism. Paulie is our star.
He teaches me patience and unconditional love. He is simple and pure. He deserves a chance to be a member of our world.
And so it is for Paul, and the thousands of young adults and children shattered by autism, that I ask you to please donate your time and contributions to Paulie’s Promise.
Please walk with us on June 5th at our new location: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, 333 Westchester Avenue, White Plains, New York. There will be shuttle busses to escort you to the walk grounds. Registration 9AM- Ceremonies 10AM- Ribbon Cutting 11AM
With love and heartfelt thanks,
Sabrina
