The previous article expanded on the usefulness of social stories. I offered a story for when you have lost something and get angry, which followed the first article about dealing with changes in the schedule or routine . I will continue to offer more examples of social stories that cover some of the anxieties and frustrations that occur when children on the autism spectrum have a break in their schedule or routine (as children in Marshfield, MA are just beginning the break between the regular school year and the extended school year programs).
Offered in this article is a story for a child who will be in a different classroom with a different teacher for the ESY portion of the school year. As is always the case, tweak as needed and insert personal language for your child's individual needs.
GOING BACK TO SCHOOL IN THE SUMMER
My name is Jenny and I live in Marshfield.
Some kids go back to school after July 4th, instead of waiting until the end of the summer. It's a great time to see my friends again. Sometimes I am in a different classroom in the summer than during the rest of the school year.
I will be in a new classroom with different pictures and posters on the walls. My teacher will be different. Some kids in my class might be different, too. I will know most of them already, though.
Some people feel nervous about meeting new friends and teachers. They might feel anxious about learning a new routine for the school day, too. Some things will be the same as my other classroom. Some things will be different. That's OK.
If I feel nervous or anxious when I go to the new classroom, I will do something to help myself calm down - like count to 10, take deep breaths, or something else that helps my body and brain feel better.
I will also remember that I am a great kid and friends and teachers like me! Going back to school in the new classroom is going to be great!
