Authorities reveal little as hostage crisis continues

Police in Midland City, Alabama spoke briefly to the press today about the five year old autistic boy who is being held hostage by Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65 year old loner. Kevin Cook, a spokesman for the Alabama state troopers said that the boy was getting toys, coloring books, medication, an electric heater, and blankets delivered to him through a pipe going down into Dykes underground bunker.

This underground bunker is described as being only 6 by 8 feet floor space, and was constructed by Dykes months ago.

Midland City Police also said they would be holding a press conference at 9 P.M. tonight. However, this afternoon they said little about the boy's condition and declined to give any information about ongoing negotiations between the police and Dykes. They will only say they are in constant communication with Dykes.

Neighbors describe Dykes as a loner, who is anti-government. One neighbor, Michael Creel believes he is using this hostage situation for attention.

"I believe he wants to rant and rave about politics and government," Creel said. "He's very concerned about his property. He doesn't want his stuff messed with."

The young boy, who has a form of autism known as Asperger's Syndrome as well as ADHD, was taken from his school bus on Tuesday after Dykes got on the bus, shot and killed the bus driver and then took the boy as a hostage.
