Last year DBR Books had the opportunity to review the middle school Australian fantasy The Sword of Demelza written by Jeanne E. Rogers. We are pleased to report that The Sword of Demelza has received its due recognition and was recently awarded Honorable Mention in Writer's Digest 2013 eBook Awards! Congratulations Jeanne Rogers!
The Sword of Demelza is one of courage and tenacity. Red fox Devon and his friends Eric and Emma, plus a band of village people created a rebel army to gain back control of a powerful sword, overthrow an evil king, and restore peace to the villages. Together with Rogers' highly descriptive writing style and illustrators Atherfold's and Hubert's creative illustrations, the book becomes the kind of literature that readers won't easily forget.
At the heart of this middle school Australian fantasy is the subject of endangered and extinct species of Australia. The reader quickly becomes aware of several kinds of animals (some of which we've never even heard of) on Australia's endangered species list. The vivid illustrations of these endangered and extinct animals allow readers to learn about indigenous species in another part of the world. It also helps that there is a glossary giving a bit of history of each animal mentioned in the book.
The Sword of Demelza is one of adventure and suspense and we encourage you to add it to your reading list if you haven't already done so. You'll find that you won't be able to put it down until you're done reading; we know we couldn't!
