A good read is hard to find, especially if your passion is lesbian erotica and fiction. Many authors are foregoing the traditional route and publish independently to e-readers such as Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook. Lillian Bendover has put pen to paper to present a series of lesbian erotica titled The Awakening. Bendover was kind enough to answer a few questions about her writing as well as her newest publication.
Lauryn Page: How long have you been writing?
Lillian Bendover: Since fourth grade? I would have to say ever since I was able to understand how to properly write, as much as one can in the fourth grade, I have been putting pen to paper. For a while I was into spoken word poetry but prose has always managed to write an erotic piece here and there but last May was when I took the plunge and went at this with everything.
LP: What is writing your passion?
LB: Because it feels like breathing. I love how putting words together can take someone far away while they are sitting in their living room or on their bed. I love how I can put words together and bring someone into a heated moment between two characters. Writing is like magic and I get to create it every time I put pen to paper or rather fingers to keyboard.
LP: Who are a few of your influences?
LB: Langston Hughes was my first major influence way back in high school. It was from reading his poems that I realized how alive words can make a piece if you use them wisely and well. Currently, I would have to say fellow erotica writer Delilah Fawkes. I’ve learned much of the erotica trade from watching how she has managed her own career and by her graciously sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with those of us who’ve wanted to try our hand in this genre.
LP: Tell me a little about The Awakening series.
LB: The Awakening series is about a bi-racial young lady named June Montgomery who had done everything like she had been instructed to in order to be successful in life. But she was woefully unfulfilled. She wasn't sure what was missing but felt like something was. She is in a manner of speaking, asleep to herself as a woman, asleep to her desires, until she gets a new boss by the name of Hollander (Holly) Trudeau. Holly is a slightly older, futch (feminine butch) woman, who becomes smitten with her. June finds herself making love to Holly like a fish in water and her disjointed life begins to make sense to her.
But before she has time to fully understand herself and this new-to-her lesbian life, she is swept up in xx drama (Holly's), new love drama and coming out to her unsuspecting parents, who are anything but thrilled. She pushes her own limits of her understanding. The series is about June navigating her life, what she thinks, why she thinks it and the conclusions she comes to in the end. But in between she has steamy sex... lots of steamy sex. We also get a peek into some of the other character's lives as well so there is a good mix. I think all of us are June in some kind of way.
