Jennifer Chiaverini, the New York Times bestselling author of the Elm Creek Quilt series, is coming to Collegeville on Jan. 20 to sign and discuss her new standalone novel, "Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker" (on sale Jan. 15). The event will be held at Towne Book Center, 220 Plaza Drive, Suite B-3, at 2 p.m.
Chiaverini expertly weaves the story of Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker, Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave whose seamstress skills earned her a place in the White House. As witness to many private moments in the household, Keckley becomes close friends with her employer, helping her through many personal struggles. But when the seamstress published a scandalous book, "Behind the Scenes: Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House," Lincoln severed ties with her former trusted confidante.
