Author and Poet Maya Angelou Dies at 86

Angelou representatives confirmed Wednesday that the renowned author, poet, actress and dancer has passed away at the age of 86.

Best known for her world famous books such as "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," and poems like "Phenomenal Women."

She studied drama at a young age, and appeared in several films, most recently Tyler Perry's "Family Reunion." She was also one of the first black women directors.

In addition to her work in the arts, Angelou has served as a long time Civil Rights activist, and worked with the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

President Obama awarded her with the Medal of Freedom in 2011, the country's highest civilian honor.

Angelou is survived by a Son.
