Novak Djokovic continued his dominance of the Australian Open by beating Andy Murray 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-2 in the final. This is the fourth championship down under and third consecutive for the world ranked No. 1 player.
For the first set and a half, neither player could get an edge. Murray had a chance to fully take over by winning the first set tiebreaker and getting three breaks early in the second set.
Then Djokovic did what he does best, withstand the challenge and hit back. The Serb’s serve started to do damage and his usual stodgy defense kept Murray running to hit one too many balls resulting in errors for the Brit.
After taking the second set tiebreaker, Djokovic started hitting his marks and hurting Murray. Then Djokovic started to rack up the service breaks, something neither player could muster during the first 33 games. The third set was in the bag.
The pressure took its toll and Murray was done. The fourth set was just a finishing detail and Djokovic confirmed why he is the top tennis player.
Djokovic said, "I tried to use that necessary experience in the past to implement that in my game, in my mental approach and mindset before this final. I didn't expect an easy match. You never get the Grand Slam trophy in an easy way. You have to earn it.”
This might not have been Murray’s day, but recent outings show he is going to stay a factor and the Australian Open proves that Djokovic is going the keep the bar high.
