Australia names preliminary World Cup squad

Socceroos manager, Ange Postecoglou named his 30 man preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup, marking his first senior squad for a major tournament.

Ben Halloran and Bailey Wright have both been named to the squad, and come in as uncapped players, similar to Josh Kennedy’s call up to the 2006 squad.

Kennedy joins Tim Cahill, Mark Bresciano, Mark Milligan and Luke Wilkshire who are all named in to their third straight World Cup squad.

Ten players currently playing the A-League are in the squad, with Newcastle Jets producing three players for the squad, showing how poor their season really was.

11 more players saw their careers come through the A-League, including the likely captain, Mile Jedinak, currently at Crystal Palace.

The squad shows big signs of the Postecoglou philosophy, with an average age of 25.5, and the domination of the A-League in the squad is a clear statement of intent from Postecoglou.

The notable exclusion is Trent Sainsbury, who has struggled to overcome his injury with Postecoglou keen to point out that fitness was a part of his selection.

The side will begin assembling at Gosford for the pre-tournament camp beginning on Thursday as they start preparations for the World Cup at the Central Coast Mariners Center of Excellence.

It will not be a restful camp for the players as the Socceroos squad will quickly be culled down to 27 in a week ahead of Australia’s farewell match against South Africa on May 26th.

Should players make that 27 man squad, they will then make the plane to Brazil, with the remaining 27 leaving for the World Cup on May 28thfor their World Cup base.

Of that 27 only 23 will be eligible for the tournament with the final four exclusions unveiled on June 2nd as the FIFA deadline for the final 23 man squad.

One decision for Postecoglou is obvious with four goalkeepers; Mark Birighitti, Eugene Galekovic, Mitch Langerak and Mat Ryan, all named to the squad, with one of Birighitti and Galekovic likely to be excluded from the final 23 man squad.
