Britain’s Laura Robson scored another victory over a top ten player by downing No. 8 seed Petra Kvitova 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 in a second-round Australian Open match.
In the 2012 U.S. Open, Robson had wins over Li Na and Kim Clijsters. Robson along with Andy Murray won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the Olympics.
Kvitova won the 2011 Wimbledon title and once was ranked No. 2. The Czech had reached the semi-finals of last year’s Australian Open and French Open.
Robson’s triumph was not a thing of beauty as the two left handers went more for power and along the way committed a high amount of errors. This was not a showcase for rallies as the two players consistently went for the knock-out punch.
"I knew it was going to be really, really tough," Robson said. "I always struggle against lefties. Trying to return her serve was really hard, but when I got my returns going better and my confidence back, I managed to get myself into the match."
Kvitova, struggling with asthma and had a bout of dizziness during her win over Francesca Schiavone, offered up 14 double faults in this sloppy match.
American Sloane Stephens is next for Robson in her third round match of the Australian Open.
