Let's say a person was looking for a premier shot bar, one that has a long-standing relationship with many of the locals and also serves as a beginning to any good night downtown, they would be delighted to find that such a bar exists. Since 1992, Cheers on Sixth has been the place to get a shot or two before escaping into Austin's busy streets.
Although the exterior gives very little justice to the potential of this bar, it certainly delivers where it counts. While inside you will stumble upon a unique layout, just a few steps down, there is a dim-lit seating area opposite a mesmeric collection of bottles, which are ready to seduce even the stubbornest of liquor enthusiasts. This bar tends to fill up and it becomes tight so its best to take the stairs up to the second floor and take a bird's eye look at the lofty upper level. After catching a glimpse atop, it is time to head down to the most popular spot for many; the outside patio which houses two extra bars designed to entertain larger parties. The newly renovated upper patio features a stage and DJ booth, to keep up with the energetic college crowds. Some future plans include a possible expansion for the deck, to heighten the city's view which in my book, only adds to this bars appeal.
Interestingly enough, this bar originally had plans to function as a beer and sandwich shop then later settled in as one of Austin's top local picks. Johnny Depp is rumored to have been a resident neighbor to this historical spot. The bar is mostly known for its ability to create just about any shot desired. Some of the regular favorites include the "Flaming Dr. Peppers," and the "Blue Waves," which should be cautioned they are surprising.
Adam Roger, who has served as the venue's general manager since 97, gave some insight into the companies loyalty. "To the staff, the bar is like home," he stated and "many have worked here for half a decade." The bar is strictly a "word of mouth" bar and this is ironic because that is exactly how I found it. He also spoke about what maintains the bar, expressing that "in order to be successful, you have to meet people on a personal level." It is a perfect approach that has definitely worked for them.
Cheers is located at 416 E. Sixth St Austin, TX
As for upcoming events, the SXSW lineup for this bar is intense, beginning with a St. Patrick's Day Opening Night Party on March 17th, 21+ with no cover. Many are expected to get their first drinks of the night at this event. If you haven't had a chance to check out this bar, put it on your list of bars to visit next time your downtown.
