It's that time again, at least once a week I will try to locate a bar to share with my readers. A bar that will offer a unique experience not to be compared with your typical highly populated music venure, crowded dance spot or rowdy shot bar although it may be exciting at times.
The quest this go around begins with a few common reviews of a location bustling with exclusivity and in many cases the host of an exceptionally intriguing happy hour.
At the start of the week my sights were turned to the up and coming Southeast region of downtown Austin. Submerged is a underwater themed club directly across from the Convention Center on the corner of Trinity and West St.
Since its introduction 7 months ago to what some are now calling the "Waterfront District," the listing has hosted several impressive corporate events and private parties. The bar features an inviting front lounging area, a charming bar with full selections on rare liquors, wines, and beers. It also houses a one-of-a-kind VIP lounge that is complementary with the purchase of your bottle of choice. It expanded adding a couple new features like the secluded multi-media booth, a larger fountain backdrop and elegant lighting accents. There are also plans for a private rooftop project to begin in the next few months to be completed at the conclusion of this year.
Among the many popular drinks that this lavish bar serves up the delicious Mermaid Margarita, an exquisitely refreshing concoction with hints of patron, granmarnier and a personal favorite, classic lime takes the best drink award for its clever sweet taste. Its just another great drink to share among work buddies during the last few day of Tequila Month.
Niles Patel, a former UT Law grad always had an interest in the progression of things in life, turning his attention to the business side of things, he decided he would continue on with his family's specialty the hotel industry.
After a few years, he then ventured on to the nightlife scene. He currently owns leasing rights to several bars in the downtown area with Submerged being his latest endeavor. The soft blues and warm green tones help paint an remarkably stunning internal portrait of style, giving flare to the most noticably mediocre bars with pretentious exterior borders surrounding the city. Niles feels that each person that enters his bar deserves to be greeted with the highest level of quality service. It is a means of insuring all recieve the "red carpet" treatment which in todays economy is scarce to come by. The building originally housed the bar "90 Proof" which gathered many local patrons during its brief existence in Austin's bar and nightlife scene.
The live music for this venue mixes up weekly with the most popular being the retro Dj's that spin for Futuristic Fridays and the reputation of the bar is that it is never extremely crowded so it is the perfect place to get away from the chaotic clubs downtown. Some weekly specials include a call it any $3 dollar drink on Mondays and Wednesdays, thirsty thursdays and a free appetizer buffet during happy hour. This bar is definitely worth checking out if even for a few late-night cocktails before you decide to brave the masses elsewhere!
