Do you want to speak up for those who can't? Then, Action for Animals (AFA), is the group you want to join!
Action For Animals was founded in 1992 by Lauren Ornelas while she was a student at St. Edwards University. Lauren was an activist at an early age, starting her own animal rights group at her elementary school. She went on to form St. Edwards Animals Rights Society, which continued on as Action For Animals. Lauren has moved on to serve as executive director of Viva! USA. In 2006 she founded The Food Empowerment Project, and now serves on their board of directors. Currently, Ernest Samudio is the unofficial leader of Action for Animals, and he continues the tradition Lauren started and keeps Action for Animals on the map, in Austin and other places, too!
Action For Animals (AFA) is a nonprofit Austin group whose sole mission is to speak up for animals to ensure their defense and protection. Like organizations, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and In Defense of Animals (IDA), Action for Animals (AFA) believes that animals have their own agendas and are not meant for abuse or even use in whatever way deemed necessary by humans. AFA says, "NO!" to circuses, zoos, animal research, hunting, trapping, factory farms, just to name a few. Any industry that treats animals as nonsentient objects and profit commodities is considered animal abuse institutions by Action for Animals.
Action for Animals sets out to help animals in peaceful demonstrations which include:
- Educating the public as to the principles of the animal rights movement;
- Exposing to public awareness the inhumane conditions in which many non-human animals are forced to exist;
- Working to increase public awareness regarding the treatment of non-human animals;
- Working with local, state, and federal government to challenge and ultimately bring a stop to inhumane practices toward non-human animals through changes in public policy;
- Working cooperatively with national animal rights organizations to bring their campaigns to Austin and surrounding areas; and
- Intervening whenever possible on behalf of animals, to help safeguard their moral right to remain safe, protected, and unharmed.

Austin already has numerous groups that aim to help companion animals (dogs, cats and other furry pets), but Action for Animals is the only organization here that aims to help improve the lives of all animals.
