Austin Music Industry Holiday Gift Guide 2009

Still stumped on a gift for that aspiring Austin rocker in your life?  Here are some local places you can find a gift that hits the right note:

Waterloo Records - You can find lots of great gifts at Waterloo Records, including CDs, DVDs, vinyl, t-shirts and other gear.  And not only are you shopping locally, you can buy lots of great local music here as well.  Not sure what to get?  Check out the list of what they Recommend and the Shiner TX Top 10, which includes Matt the Electrician's latest CD, Animal Boy.

KGSR Broadcast CD Vol. 17 - Looking for a gift for the music lover who has every CD?  The annual KGSR Broadcasts two-disc CD set is comprised of live recordings from your local radio station KGSR (formerly at 107.1, now at 93.3 on your dial).  This year's volume features a wide range of artists, including Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Calexico, The Derek Trucks Band, Andrew Bird, Tori Amos, Spoon, Steve Earle, and many others.  And best of all it's a gift that keeps on giving: the majority of the proceeds are donated to the SIMS Foundation, which provides mental health and addiction recovery services to Austin musicians and their immediate families, and a small portion of the proceeds also go to support the Blues on the Green series.

Heart of Texas Music Inc. - You've probably seen the awesome guitar sign for the Heart of Texas Music Inc. shop on South Lamar, in the same center as the Alamo Draft House.  But step inside this Texas tradition to find rare guitars at great prices.

End of an Ear - As the 'Live Music Capital of the World', Austin has many music stores, but what is often called the Best Local Record Shop is End of an Ear.  Here you can find vinyl, CDs, tickets, and lots of music knowledge.  Tucked into a little cluster of shops on South 1st Street, End of an Ear is an easy spot to spend a while looking through their eclectic collection and pick up some gifts for the picky music lovers on your list.

Mondo Tees - Located in the South Lamar Alamo Draft House, they can help you put a new t-shirt in the rotation of your musician friend/lover/somewhere-in-between.  They have a whole Daniel Johnston collection, movie shirts, and music shirts, including ones with cassette tapes on them, remember those?

Stubb's BBQ Sauce - You may love Stubb's for the shows, or for the barbeque, but odds are you love both.  Give that starving musician on your list something to eat, hopefully they can afford something to put the barbeque sauce on but odds are s/he's had a Lone Star and barbeque sauce dinner before.

Strait Music Co - With a North Location where 183 and 620 meet and a South Location at Ben White and Lamar, Strait Music has you covered for music supplies and lessons.  Browse the guitars, amps, keyboards, accordions, drums, and so much more.
