The Austin Film Festival 2010 announced winners to the 2010 Film Competition on Saturday at the Austin Film Festival Awards Luncheon. Outstanding competition winners earned a range of cash prizes from $500 to $5,000, and bonus opportunities for access to agents and other filmmakers.
Winning films are chosen from six main categories; Narrative Shorts, Narrative Feature, Narrative Student Short, Animated Short, Documentary Feature and Documentary Short. The Narrative Feature winner is Adios Mundo Cruel, a humorous comedy of errors by Mexican filmmaker/script writer Jack Zagha Kababie and Enrique Chmelnik. Best Documentary Feature went to Louder Than a Bomb. This documentary by directors Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel folllows four high school slam poetry teams as they try to reach their dreams in Chicago. Best Narrative Short was awarded to Katrina’s Son, a tale of adventure and heartache. By filmmaker Ya’ke, this short follows a little boy in the aftermath of Katrina as he travels from New Orleans to San Antonio in search of his mother. Best Documentary Short went to Birthright. Best Animated Short went to The Lost Thing. And finally Best Narrative Student Short went to Down in Number 5.
The film festival saw plenty of Indy films from diverse cultural backgrounds, and gave many young and new filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their talent. In addition to cash prizes, winners of this year’s competition also received reimbursements for travel and lodging, and also access to some successful and influential writers, agents, producers and filmmakers in the industry.
