When a dog running with his owner in the Sunshine Race in Austin, Texas collapsed this morning, paramedics from the Austin Travis County Emergency Services sprung into action, according to an article posted on the KXAN website earlier today.
The dog was described by EMS as an "atypical patient", according to a posting made on their Facebook page earlier today.
According to the KXAN article, the dog had become overheated during the race and collapsed with hyperthermia.
EMS told KXAN that the dog's temperature was 108 degrees. The owner said that although he had prepared for both himself and the dog in advance of the race, the high temperatures caught him by surprise. He had water for the pup, but the dog did not seem thirsty.
The dog is recovering, and although he is in serious but stable condition, he is expected to be fine.
