Austell man, 67, dies after losing control of car, hitting some trees in Smyrna

An elderly Austell man was killed after he lost control of his vehicle and struck several trees on the side of a Smyrna road Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at 11:14 a.m. near the intersection of the East-West Connector and Fontaine Road, according to Cobb County police.

Investigators said Mr. Nelson Villavicencio was driving a white 2001 Hyundai Elantra westbound in the East-West Connector and had just passed through the intersection when he drove off the roadway and onto the grass shoulder.

“The car eventually came to stop after striking trees on the northern edge of the grass shoulder,” police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said.

Mr. Villavicencio was transported by ambulance to Wellstar South Cobb Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Sgt. Pierce said.

“Investigators suspect that Mr. Villavicencio may have experienced some type of medical distress prior to the collision,” Sgt. Pierce said.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy.

Anyone with information which may assist investigators with this deadly crash is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
