Aussies Abroad: Champions League

Australia had three players involved in the European Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday with all teams managing points.

Mitchell Langerak was the starting keeper for Borussia Dortmund as they demolished Olympique Marseille keeping a clean sheet as the finalists managed a 3-0 win.

It was another impressive performance from Langerak after being thrown in to goal for Dortmund in recent weeks due to injury, he looks to continue his development, and with a World Cup in 2014, he is getting more game time at this high level than the usual number one, Mark Schwarzer who spent Champions League match day two riding the bench with Chelsea.

James Holland was in action for Austria Wien as he played the full 90 in their trip to Russia to take on Zenit St. Petersburg which ended scoreless.

The only Australian to see a loss was Tom Rogic at Celtic as they couldn't repeat their heroics of 2012 falling to a 1-0 loss at Parkhead but Rogic was unable to make an impact as he was an unused substitute in the match.

Wednesday saw another win for an Australian as Robbie Kruse came on in the 68th minute for Bayer Leverkusen playing a late cameo role in his side's 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

The other notable impact from an Australian overseas was in Indonesia where Mario Karlovic scored with a 54th minute free-kick goal for Persebaya to put them 2-1 in front against Persiraja Banda Aceh who fought back to level the scores for a 2-2 draw.
