Dry Dock Brewing Co., located in Aurora offers the true Colorado beer bar experience.
Before one walks into Dry Dock, there are a few things that are inevitably noticeable. First, the entire front of the establishment is glass, allowing the potential guest a taste of what's to come. Once entered, the bar greets the visitor with an ambience of good times - and good beer - being had by all.
Dry Dock is a small establishment that was recently name the best small brewery in the U.S. at the Great American Beer Festival. It offers sparse seating but a jovial atmosphere. Despite the loud music and crowded space, the staff is accommodating, eager to treat its guests with a tasty "appetizer" - a 3 oz. sample of any of the brewery's featured beers - or a pint of their weekly-tapped Firkin - a small-batch brew that has been aged for an unusually long time for the style.
This week's Firkin is a pale ale that is run through dry hops before served. The color is dark copper, cloudy, with a loose head that dissipates quickly. The aroma hops take awhile to make a presence. The flavor is nothing special on this one; no malt backbone supports the overall bitterness from the hops, and the brew tastes very watered-down. Much more reminiscent of the English-style "session" pale ale, this beer is not one of the brewery's best-tasting; but it is still intriguing as it is not typical for a pale ale.
Despite its unusual firkin, this cozy beer bar is a delightful treat for any zymurgy enthusiast. When asked about specifics pertaining to the beers, the bartender often defers to a nearby-seated guest. The bar is inundated with home brewers who know more about beer than almost any given bartender in the U.S.
Attached to Dry Dock is The Brew Hut, a store dedicated to home brewing for the beginner and advanced home brewer.
A haven for beer enthusiasts, Dry Dock offers something special for all tastes. Its award-winning brews include a nitro-induced Extra Special Bitter, Alt-bier, Old Ale, and Apricot Blonde - the brewery's best-selling beer, according to a Dry Dock bartender. These special brews are merely compliments to the traditional Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Porter, and India Pale Ale brews that Dry Dock offers.
