Auntie Ann’s copycat pretzels

One of my favorite things to do with my girlfriends as a teen was to go to the mall. There was nothing more enjoying than window shopping, trying on clothes and shoes, gossiping, and of course stopping at the food court for tasty treats.

Restaurant recipes like this one for Auntie Ann's Copycat Pretzels are fun to make and fun to eat. These savory, salty pretzels will transport you back to the mall without leaving your house!

Auntie Ann’s Copycat Pretzels (recipe from Sweets by Sarah)
Makes about 12 pretzels

Ingredients:

1 1/2 c warm water
1 1/8 t active yeast
2 T brown sugar
1 1/8 t salt
1 c bread flour
3 c flour

2 c warm water
2 T baking soda

Kosher salt, to taste
2-4 T butter, melted

Directions:

  • Sprinkle yeast on lukewarm water in mixing bowl; stir to dissolve. Add sugar, salt, and stir to dissolve; add flour and knead dough until smooth and elastic. Let rise at least 30 minutes.
  •
  • While dough is rising, prepare a baking soda water bath with 2 cups warm water and 2 T baking soda. Be certain to stir often.
  •
  • After dough has risen, pinch off bits of dough and roll into a long rope (about 1/2 in or less thick) and shape. Dip pretzel into soda solution and place on greased baking sheet. Allow pretzels to rise again.
  • Bake in a 450 degree preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until golden. Brush with melted butter, sprinkle with salt, and enjoy!

  • Be creative by brushing the pretzel with melted butter and then sprinkling it lightly with your favorite spices such as Rosemary, oregano, basil, or onion.
