August Wilson’s Seven Guitars opens at Marin Theatre Company on August 16, the first time the Mill Valley theater has had a play by Wilson. Seven Guitarsis one of Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, 10 plays exploring African American life in the 20th century decade by decade. This play, set in 1949, and is full of music, particularly the blues. The play tells the story, in flashbacks, of blues singer Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton and six people in his Pittsburgh neighborhood
The play has a stellar cast including Shinelle Azoroh, Charles Branklyn, L. Peter Callender, Margo Hall, Omoze Idehenre, Marc Damon Johnson, and Tobie L. Windham. Music plays a major role in the story, and Winton, a recent graduate of the MFA program at A.C. T. learned guitar for the role. Guest director Kent Gash specializes in musical theater along with drama at New York University, and has directed three other plays in the Pittsburgh Cycle.
